Am I Eligible for the Warm Home Discount scheme?

Warm Home Discount is a government incentive that helps towards your electricity bill. You receive £140 as a one-off discount toward your electricity bill, between September and March.

However, if you feel you are paying too much for your energy bills, you can switch your energy tariff or supplier, hassle-free.

You may be able to get the discount on your gas bill if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity, but you will need to contact your supplier to find out.

The Warm Home Discount does not affect your Cold Weather payment or Winter Fuel Payment.

There are two ways that qualify you to receive the Warm Home Discount Scheme:

  • You get the Guarantee Credit Element of Pension Credit - known as the ‘core group’

  • You are on a low income and meet your energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme - known as the ‘broader group’

How you apply for the Warm Home Discount Scheme depends on how you qualify for the discount.

If you are known as the ‘core group’ you qualify for for the discount, if all the following applied:

  • Your energy supplier must be part of the Warm Home Discount Scheme

  • Your name (or your partner’s name) was on the bill

  • You were receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you get Savings Credit as well)

If you are known as the ‘broader group’ you can apply directly from your supplier:

  • Your energy supplier must be part of the Warm Home Discount Scheme

  • You are on a low income

  • You receive certain means-tested benefits

To receive the discount, you need to stay with your supplier until it has been paid.

How to apply:

You will receive a letter by November, telling you how to apply for the discount if you qualify.

Your letter will say if you need to call a helpline by the end of January to confirm your details.

Your electricity supplier will then apply the discount to your bill by the end of March.
